Submission Information

Write for us!

Dead Letters welcomes writers and scholars from every discipline. In general, we're interested in articles on any aspect of the Grateful Dead® and the contexts — artistic, historical, cultural, and otherwise — that illuminate them, and which they shed light on. Previous volumes are a good way to become familiar with what we choose.

Submission Format

We prefer electronic submission via the Internet. Please use some form of MS Word, either Macintosh or PC platform, and notify us of the particulars in your email. For other arrangements, please contact us.

Length

As long as you need, really. Our reviews range from 2 to 12 pages, features from 3 to more than 20.

Stylesheet

For text, we favor Times, 12 pt., with footnotes in Times, 10 pt. Please indent long quotations. Please footnote all references in the text of your paper and provide a full list of sources cited at the end, following the formats below.

Footnotes

Please be scrupulous in your attributions. In particular, cite published sources for all lyrics. For footnotes, we tend to favor MLA 1977 style; in simplest form, it suggests:

First and Last Name, Title: Subtitle (Place: Publisher, year), pg. no(s).

Example: Lemon Meringue, The Art of Pie Consumption (New York: Piebald Publishing, 1901), pp.23-5.

Bibliography/Works Cited

We publish a wide range of academic disciplines, and can accommodate the citation conventions of each. Ideally, we like old-fashioned footnotes with complete information in them; for social scientists (and those who favor this style), we publish MLA-style in-text references with full sources in a Sources Cited section.

Example: Lemon Meringue, The Art of Pie Consumption, 2 vols. John Thompson, ed. (New York: Piebald Publishing, 1901).
